Sapphire
Sapphire has captivated readers and audiences alike with her soulful and artistic expressions of life. Perhaps her most well-known work is her award-winning and internationally-recognized novel, Push, released in 1996. Push has won the Book-of-the-Month Club Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction and the Black Caucus of the American Library Association’s First Novelist Award, among other recognitions. In 2009, Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire, the film adaptation of Sapphire’s novel, Push, won top awards at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The film is a vibrant, honest and resoundingly hopeful film about the human capacity to grow and overcome. Sapphire’s work has been translated into thirteen languages and has been adapted for stage in the United States and Europe. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including The Black Scholar and The New Yorker, and she has performed her poetry around the world.
