The three North Carolina affiliates of Dress for Success (DFS) are the designated charitable partners for the 2010 North Carolina Governor’s Conference for Women to be held at the Raleigh Convention Center Tuesday, November 9.
Dress for Success, now aninternational not-for-profit organization with 110 affiliates, was founded in New York City in 1997. It promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and career development tools to help them thrive. In North Carolina, there are chapters in Charlotte, the Triangle and Winston-Salem.
Says Gordon, “We deeply appreciate the conference’s decision to support Dress for Success through financial contributions, in-kind donations and increased visibility. While Dress for Success may be best known for providing suits to women, it is our employment retention programs that are the cornerstone of the organization. I am looking forward to sharing the insights we have learned in this area with those attending the Conference.”
Another highlight will be a performance by the Maryland-based Liz Lerman Dance Exchange featuring DFS clients. The troupe is a professional company of dance artists who create, perform, teach and engage people in making art. The performance will be taped prior to the conference and then shown to attendees to highlight Dress for Success.
By partnering with Dress for Success, the Conference plans to provide the three state affiliates with financial and in-kind support, plus increase awareness of the organization among conference attendees and encourage them to become involved. The efforts include:
· Registrants will have the option to contribute to DFS as part of their online registration process. Monies collected by the conference will be distributed among the three state chapters.
· The conference will promote a ‘Professional Accessory Drive.’ Collection points will be set up at the conference for the donations.
· 15 conference scholarships will be awarded to DFS clients.
